Welcome Ceilidh, Music by No Strings Attached with Caller Teresa Williams

Friday, 22nd July at The WI Hall, 19:30 - 22:30

A welcome ceilidh, a great dance for all the family!
No Strings Attached
No Strings Attached are both multi instrumentalists and have been playing and singing in bands and groups for a great number of years. As a singing duo they appear simply as Martin & Vera. For dance and music they are known as No Strings Attached and often have other musicians sit in with them. They play the best of English Dance Music plus tunes from Ireland and Scotland. Throw in a mixture of mid European music for variation and entertainment and you have the perfect evening.
As a duo, Martin & Vera have a wide repertoire of songs ranging from protest to humour and all accompanied by a combination of guitar, bass, piano or piano accordion with lively and interesting arrangements. They have appeared at folk clubs and festivals in many parts of the country.
They are contactable on M: 07503 190029 or email: martin.jardine@hotmail.co.uk
History: Besides their many weddings, private functions and folk clubs they have appeared at the following festivals:-
Sidmouth • Swanage • Wimborne • Bideford • Wadebridge • Weymouth • Bridport • Wheald Dream • Bude • Lyme Regis

Drop into the WI Hall on Saturday(23 July) between 10:00 and 16:00 to meet members of Bridport Folk Dance Club. Join in the informal dance and music workshops lead by experienced club members and guests which are taking place during the day (donations to the festival). Learn some local dances or play with the band, a chance to brush up on your moves ready for the exciting evening dance taking place at Church House, South Street.
Bridport Folk Dance Club proudly sponsor this year's Saturday Evening Social Folk Dance

Bridport Folk Dance Club is a long established part of Bridport's folk arts scene. Established in 1919, the Club continues to provide a weekly meeting for the enjoyment and continuation of the folk dance tradition from the UK and further afield. Club chairman Tim Randall says, “The Bridport Folk Dance Club Centenary Celebrations were curtailed by the pandemic lock-down. We are pleased to be back and celebrating 100 years+ at this year's festival”.

“Club membership over recent years has ranged from teenage to 80 years plus. As well as in-house musicians and callers, visiting professionals are also invited to ensure variety. We do all types of folk dance, from the 18th Century to today, from American Square and contra to local English dances. A new dance was commissioned from well known international caller Colin Hume for our Centenary Celebrations. This year activities have also been enhanced by a visit from Wylde Morris and an introduction to basic maypole dancing”.

Recently, Dr Michael Mosley reported that dancing has been medically proven to enhance mental and physical well being. So why not come along and meet this friendly group who socialise and exercise in an enjoyable way.

New members and visitors are also always welcome to join in at The WI hall from 7.15 pm to 9.30 pm most Mondays, excluding bank holidays.(Contact – 01308 459001 to confirm details)

Balfolk is a type of social folk dance originating in France and Belgium, but now danced all around Europe. Dances are for couples, or for larger groups in circles or lines, and are guided by the music rather than a caller. Steps are simple but there's chance to interpret it your own way! Steve Earwicker will teach basic steps for the most common dances at the start of the event, and Confluence Duo will play all of those (and a few surprises) for a bal that follows. You don't have to bring a partner - it is quite normal (and encouraged) to dance with different people during a bal.

Confluence Duo

Confluence are an instrumental meeting of ‘cello and accordion based in the New Forest. They join traditional music from the UK with beautiful dance tunes from France, Belgium and the Nordic countries, as well as self-penned tunes inspired by those traditions.  They love improvising around tunes and finding new ways to interpret them, whether for dancing or for listening.

Gill and Alasdair founded the Eurobal Wessex dance club in the New Forest and Dorset to enable groups to play for French/balfolk dancing, and play frequently at other similar clubs in London, Brighton, Oxford, Reading, Exeter and Bristol.  They have played regularly at Chippenham festival and also at Bridport, Swanage and Sidmouth, as well as folk clubs around the south coast.
