Flash Jack
Flash Jack is a group formed by combining previous members of the late lamented shanty crew Hanging Johnny with other well established local singers and musicians. We all hail from Plymouth and East Cornwall (although some of our roots are more widespread) Our repertoire has shanties and ballads old and new, tragic and comic. Tunes associated with the coast and seafaring (both at home and abroad) and songs from a woman’s perspective. We also sing ballads and work songs from the land, reflecting the strong link which has always existed between the songs from coastal districts and the songs sung by the seafarers from those districts. We maintain the honourable tradition of comic songs established by our illustrious predecessors and we positively encourage audience participation, with singing and dancing as brilliantly demonstrated by our audiences at home and our performances in France. |
Short Drag Roger
Fifteen years ago, five men met in a local pub in the landlocked village of Chalgrove in Oxfordshire and decided they wanted to form an acapella singing group to do something ‘Different’ so they decided to form a Sea Shanty Crew. They went around local pubs and folk open session nights presenting a totally different style of singing. From those humble beginnings, the crew has now grown to seven in number and although we still sing in the pubs and clubs, we are now also singing at large music and sea shanty festivals both in the UK and Europe. We have even performed at one of Britain’s major railway stations and we are regularly booked to perform at both corporate and military commemorative events. Like true shanty men we sing traditional shanties, some dating back as far as the sixteenth century. We also write our own shanties in the tradition of the seafaring Shanty man and we strive to provide our audiences with a better understanding of what shanty men did aboard the sailing ships of a bygone age. ‘Short Drag Roger’ has grown from its humble beginnings into a truly committed crew keeping shanties alive! Stables
From Matthew Lowe (Keston Cobblers Club) and Daniel Trenholme, comes the alt-folk duo Stables. Stables was formed in January 2016 during late night drinks between Matthew and Daniel in London. Matthew was working on a new project idea at the time and, after playing through what was to become their first single, 'Steam', at 5 am, the duo was born, and quickly went public four months later. Stables have gone on to tour the UK further, performing at many major festivals including Glastonbury Festival and five European, headline tours. |
Acorns
Acorns was formed when three ex members of the "Hearts of Oak", Tony Piper, Lead Tenor and Percussion, Ian Hudson, Vocals, Guitar and Banjo, and Dev Deverell, Vocals, Whistle and Guitar, got back together with the view to expand the original idea and incorporate additional voices and instruments. The "Hearts" were a highly successful close harmony and Shanty group, and regular performers at the Tall ships and Folk Festival circuit and over the years, worked with some of the greats in the genre, from Stan Hugill to Johnny Collins, and Tom Lewis to Bob Webb. To name but a few....... Formed in 2017, the seven piece line up, gives a warm, round wholesome sound, with rich vocal harmony lines and subtle instrumental backing. Our set list draws on influences from Cockersdale to Artisan, and Traditional Shanties and forbitters to humorous ditties and our audiences are encouraged to join in and add to our rousing choruses. |
Tin Angel
Tin Angel play good old American roots music: blues, old-time, swing, ragtime, who-knows-what at other times. The songs are traditional (mostly) while the twin-fiddle-fuelled music rocks. www.facebook.com/tinangelband/ |
